How to Test Raw Steroid Powder Purity: 4 Methods From $20 to Lab-Grade
Four ways to test raw steroid powder purity, from a $20 visual check to lab-grade HPLC: what each method proves, what it costs, and how accurate it really is.

"≥99% purity" is the most abused claim in the raw powder trade. The good news: you don't have to take anyone's word for it. Purity testing exists on a ladder — from free checks you can do at your desk to lab analysis that settles the question definitively. Here's all four rungs, what each one actually proves, and what it costs.
Method 1: Visual and physical inspection (free)
What it catches: the crudest frauds.
Appearance: most steroid raws are white to off-white crystalline powders. Dark, yellow-brown, or oddly colored powder is a bad sign (some compounds are naturally off-white — check the COA's stated appearance).
Texture and uniformity: should be consistent. Visible crystals mixed with fine dust, clumps, or foreign particles suggest poor processing or contamination.
Smell: strong chemical or solvent odors can indicate residual solvents from sloppy synthesis.
Solubility spot check: a small amount should dissolve cleanly in the expected solvent; undissolved residue is a red flag.
What it proves: almost nothing, rigorously speaking. But experienced buyers reject obviously bad material here before spending a cent on testing. Cost: $0.
Method 2: Melting point test (~$30–50)
What it catches: wrong compound, wrong ester, gross contamination.
As covered in our melting point guide, every steroid raw has a characteristic melting range. A digital MP apparatus costs less than a dinner out and gives you an identity screen in minutes: correct compound melts in the right range; wrong compound doesn't. A broad melting range (5°C+) signals impurities even when the midpoint looks right.
What it proves: identity (plausibly the right molecule), not purity percentage. Cost: ~$30–50 one-time.
Method 3: Reagent test kits (~$20–40 per test)
What they catch: presence/absence of the claimed compound class.
Colorimetric reagent kits (LabMax and RoidTest are the known names in this space) use chemical reactions that change color in the presence of specific steroid structures. You dissolve a tiny sample, add the reagent, and compare the color against a chart.
Strengths: cheap, fast (minutes), no equipment, decent at catching total substitutions (e.g. testosterone sold as trenbolone).
Weaknesses: they identify compound families, not exact molecules or esters; they say nothing about purity percentage; closely related steroids can give similar colors.
What it proves: the powder contains a steroid of roughly the expected type — a useful mid-tier screen between MP and lab testing. Cost: ~$20–40 per test.
Method 4: Third-party HPLC / GC-MS (lab-grade, ~$100–300)
What it catches: everything — exact identity, purity percentage, and contaminants.
You mail a small sample to an independent analytical lab (Janoshik is the best-known service in this community). They run high-performance liquid chromatography and/or mass spectrometry and return a full report: confirmed identity, assay percentage, and related substances. This is the same class of testing pharmaceutical QC labs use.
Strengths: definitive. Settles identity and purity in one report.
Weaknesses: costs money, takes days, requires mailing a sample.
What it proves: the actual answer. Cost: roughly $100–300 depending on the panel.
Comparison: cost vs what you learn

The sensible protocol for buyers
Every batch: visual inspection + melting point. Minutes of work, catches lazy fraud.
New supplier, first order: add a reagent kit screen if you want a cheap extra layer.
New supplier, first serious order: send a sample for third-party HPLC before committing to volume.
Ongoing: spot-check with HPLC periodically; keep the supplier honest.
Total cost of this protocol on a first order: a few hundred dollars — trivial against a kilo-scale purchase, and it completely changes the power dynamic with the supplier.
FAQ
Can I test purity at home without a lab? Partially. MP and reagent kits screen for identity problems, but only chromatography (HPLC/GC-MS) measures purity percentage. There's no home method for the number itself.
How much powder does third-party testing need? Typically a gram or less — check with the lab. Keep the sample in a sealed, labeled bag.
Will a supplier be offended if I test independently? Legitimate suppliers won't be. Many experienced buyers mention testing upfront — it filters out bad suppliers before money changes hands.
Do I need to test every single batch with HPLC? No — that's expensive. Test the first order from each supplier via HPLC, then use MP + visual on every batch and re-test via lab spot checks or when something seems off.
What's the single most cost-effective test? The melting point apparatus: ~$40 once, minutes per test, catches wrong-compound fraud cold.
Can these methods detect heavy metals or residual solvents? No — that needs dedicated lab panels (ICP-MS for metals, GC headspace for solvents). If that's a concern for your application, order the expanded panel from the lab.
