Every steroid raw powder has a characteristic melting point — the temperature range where its crystals melt. It's a physical constant of the molecule, which makes it one of the cheapest identity checks a buyer can run: if your "testosterone cypionate" melts at 60°C instead of ~100°C, it isn't testosterone cypionate. Here's how to do the test properly, what equipment you need, and the reference values for the common compounds.

Why melting point matters

A melting point (MP) test answers one question: is this plausibly the molecule claimed? It doesn't tell you purity percentage (that's HPLC's job), but it catches the most common frauds — substituted compounds, heavily cut powder, or the wrong ester entirely. Combined with a supplier COA, it's a strong first screen. The equipment costs less than a single vial.

What you need (under $50)

  • Digital melting point apparatus — the easy route; heats a capillary tube and displays the temperature (~$30–50 online). Or:

  • Capillary tubes (open at one end) + a thermometer/oil bath or hot plate — the manual route.

  • A small sample of the powder (a few milligrams).

  • Good lighting and patience: the test is about watching carefully.

The capillary method, step by step

  1. Pack 2–3 mm of dry powder into the closed end of a capillary tube. Tap it down — air gaps cause uneven heating.

  2. Insert the tube into the apparatus (or attach it to the thermometer in the oil bath).

  3. Heat slowly: about 1–2°C per minute as you approach the expected range. Heating too fast overshoots and gives a falsely high reading.

  4. Watch for the onset (first droplet/softening) and the clear point (fully liquid). Record both — a pure compound melts over a narrow range, typically 1–2°C.

  5. Compare against the reference table below and the supplier's COA value.

A wide melting range (say 5°C+) suggests impurities or a mixture — even if the midpoint looks right.

The quick oven method (rough screen only)

No apparatus? Place a tiny mound of powder on foil in an oven with a thermometer, heat slowly, and note when it liquefies. This is far less precise (±5°C or worse) but can still catch gross fakes — e.g. powder sold as testosterone propionate (MP ~120°C) that melts at 40°C. Treat it as a red-flag screen, never as confirmation.

Melting point reference table (18 common raws)

Indicative literature ranges. Polymorphs, measurement method, and heating rate shift values by a few degrees — always confirm against your batch COA, which should state the tested MP.

Note: peptides (BPC-157, TB-500, GHK-Cu) and most SARMs aren't MP-tested this way — peptides degrade rather than melt cleanly. For those, HPLC is the correct verification.

Honest limitations

  • MP proves identity, not purity. A sample can melt at exactly the right temperature and still be 85% pure.

  • Some compounds overlap. Oxandrolone and stanozolol melt within a few degrees of each other — MP alone can't distinguish them.

  • Low-MP compounds are tricky. Testosterone enanthate melts near body temperature; in a warm room it may already be soft, which confuses the reading. Test in a cool room.

  • Mixtures melt oddly. A 50/50 mix can show a depressed, broad range — which is itself a useful red flag.

Use MP as one layer: MP screen on receipt → compare with COA → third-party HPLC for high-value orders.

Worked example: checking testosterone enanthate

Your kilo arrives labeled testosterone enanthate, COA claims MP 36–38°C. In a 22°C room, you pack a capillary and heat at 1°C/min from 30°C. You observe softening at 35°C, fully clear at 37°C. That matches both the table and the COA — the identity check passes. If instead it stayed solid past 45°C, you'd have the wrong compound (or wrong ester) regardless of what the label says.

FAQ

How accurate is a $40 melting point apparatus? Within 1–2°C when used correctly — plenty for identity screening against the table above.

Can melting point tell me the purity percentage? No. It tells you whether the compound is plausibly correct and flags gross contamination (broad range). Percentage purity needs HPLC.

My powder melts 5°C below the table value. Is it fake? Not necessarily — could be a polymorph, measurement technique, or minor impurity. But a large deviation (10°C+) from both the table and the COA is a fail. Re-test carefully before concluding.

Does this work for SARMs and peptides? Poorly. Most SARMs lack well-standardized MP data and peptides decompose on heating. Use HPLC testing for those.

What's the cheapest way to start? A digital MP apparatus (~$30–50) plus capillaries. The oven method costs nothing but is only a rough screen.

Should I MP-test every batch? It's cheap and takes minutes — yes, test every incoming batch, and keep a log. It won't catch everything, but it catches the laziest frauds.
