How to Verify a COA From a Raw Powder Supplier (and Spot a Fake in 5 Minutes)
Learn to read a Certificate of Analysis for raw steroid, SARM and peptide powders: batch matching, assay vs identity tests, red flags, and how to confirm results with the lab.

Every raw powder supplier claims "≥99% purity, COA included." The claim is free — the Certificate of Analysis is supposed to be the proof. But most buyers can't tell a real COA from a Photoshop job, which is exactly why fake and underdosed raws keep circulating. This guide shows you how to read a COA like a QC chemist and spot a fake in about five minutes.
What a COA actually is (and isn't)
A Certificate of Analysis is a lab report for one specific batch of material. It lists the tests performed, the results, and whether the batch passed. Key point: a COA describes a batch, not a supplier. A genuine COA from 2023 says nothing about the powder shipping today. Always ask for the COA of the current batch before you pay.
A COA is also not a guarantee by itself — it's a claim made on paper. Verification means checking that the paper holds up.
Anatomy of a real COA: the 9 fields to check
#FieldWhat good looks like1Product nameExact compound, e.g. "Testosterone Enanthate" — not "Test E powder mix"2CAS numberMatches the compound (e.g. 315-37-7 for testosterone enanthate)3Batch / lot numberPresent and unique; must match the label on the goods you receive4Manufacture & test datesTest date after manufacture date; both recent relative to your order5Issuing laboratoryNamed lab with contact details — not "QC Department" with no address6Appearancee.g. "white crystalline powder" — compare with what arrives7Identity testIR, UV, or MS confirming the molecule is what it claims to be8Assay / purityHPLC result with method stated (e.g. "99.2% by HPLC") plus chromatogram9ConclusionExplicit pass/fail against a stated specification
If any of fields 1–6 are missing, stop reading — the document isn't verifiable.
Assay vs identity: the distinction that matters
Two different questions, two different tests:
Identity — Is this molecule actually testosterone enanthate? Answered by IR spectroscopy, UV, or mass spectrometry.
Assay/purity — How much of the powder is that molecule? Answered by HPLC (usually), reported as a percentage.
A COA showing "99% purity" with no identity test is a red flag: 99% of what? Conversely, an identity-only COA tells you the compound is correct but says nothing about how clean it is. A proper COA has both, plus the chromatogram — the actual HPLC graph. A purity number without a chromatogram is just a number someone typed.
Red flags: how to spot a fake COA in 5 minutes
No batch/lot number, or a batch number that doesn't match your goods.
Assay-only, no chromatogram. Real HPLC testing produces a graph. No graph, no proof.
No named laboratory. "Tested by our QC lab" with no lab name, address, or contact is unverifiable by design.
Impossible dates — test date before manufacture date, or a COA dated years before your order presented as current.
Copy-paste artifacts — misaligned text boxes, inconsistent fonts, or a logo that looks pasted over another document.
Every batch is exactly 99.x%. Real manufacturing varies. A supplier whose last twenty batches all assay at 99.1–99.3% is likely reusing one report.
Refusal to provide the current batch's COA before payment, or "we'll send it with the goods."
How to verify with the lab (the 10-minute version)
Note the lab name, report number, and batch number on the COA.
Find the lab's real contact details independently (their website — not a phone number printed on the COA).
Email them: "Please confirm report [number] for batch [number], [compound], dated [date]."
Legitimate labs answer this routinely; it's a normal QC request.
If the supplier can't name a lab you can contact, treat the COA as marketing material, not evidence.
Third-party testing: the gold standard
For high-value orders, skip the supplier's paperwork entirely and test yourself. Independent analytical services (Janoshik is the best-known in this community) accept mailed samples and return HPLC/GC-MS results, typically within days, for a fee far smaller than a bad kilo. Many experienced buyers test the first order from any new supplier and spot-check after that. Mention it in your negotiations — suppliers who know you'll test tend to ship what they promise.
What to ask your supplier before ordering
COA for the current batch, with chromatogram, before payment
Batch number in writing on the invoice, matching the COA
What happens if third-party testing disagrees with their COA (get the answer in writing)
Sample policy: will they sell a small test quantity first?
A supplier who answers all four crisply is worth more than one with the lowest quote.
FAQ
Can a COA be faked? Yes, easily — it's a PDF. That's why batch matching, a named contactable lab, and the chromatogram matter more than the document's appearance.
What's more important, HPLC purity or the identity test? Both, for different reasons. Identity proves you got the right molecule; HPLC assay proves how clean it is. Never accept one without the other.
My supplier's COA says 99% but there's no chromatogram. Is that enough? No. Without the chromatogram you can't see related substances or confirm the number wasn't typed in. Ask for it.
How do I check a batch number? Match it across three places: the COA, the invoice/packing list, and the physical label on the goods. All three must agree.
Should I trust a COA from the supplier's "own lab"? Only as a starting point. In-house testing has an obvious conflict of interest. For real assurance, verify with the named lab or test independently.
How often should I re-verify? Every new batch, at minimum on paper (batch-matched COA). Physically test the first order from a new supplier and spot-check periodically after that.
Buying raw powders? Request a quote and ask for the current batch COA — we'll send it before you pay.
